Hurst Racing Tires has some vintage style drag slicks in the works that are due to come out late this summer. Thanks for the tip from Chip Quinn, the page can be viewed HERE.
From a financial success standpoint the choice to make them in the 19" rim size appears to be a poor one. I'm assuming it's a matter of the tooling they have. Obviously a 18" slick would have a much larger customer base. As far as the cool factor goes I love the fact that they are doing these in the 19" size. Some of the original Cadet retread drag slicks from the early 1960's were in the 19" size that was much more common at that time as used on various British makes. The pie crust sidewall design is super cool too and I do believe there was a period motorcycle drag slick at some point with that type of sidewall, but I do not have any proof at this point. I remember seeing them though many years ago. The value of old 19" Triumph rear rims is about to go up!

A sample of Cadet retreaded slicks circa 1962.
You'll note that the one in the picture is an 18". Cody told me that was their first stab at doing this tire, and the vintage mold they found and purchased just wouldn't work with the 18" size. 19"worked without issue though... so 19" it is! Chip Quinn
ReplyDeleteBADASS!! Thats weird how it states 19" on the website and 18" on the tire in the pic? Either way its killer, happy to see them making this!
ReplyDeleteYeah, it is weird. There's gotta be a story there. Chip said that he talked to the guy at Hurst and he did specify they were going to be 19".
ReplyDeleteSorry guys, posted these comments in reverse order. So by what he said to Chip it sounds like the 19" might be the only size ever made by them. That might keep them from showing up on every goddamn bobber on the block. Cool!
ReplyDeleteMy more cynical mind recons that this is car guys trying to meet a motorcycle guy want ,missed the mark by about 4"x 18"
ReplyDeleteCheers
Rene
Just a quick note, I just got off the phone with Cody up at Hurst and the final prototype tire is up on the web sight as of now. It's worth a look! Oh, and I am assured that 18x4 is being considered for the future. Chip Quinn
ReplyDeleteHow I WISH someone would make either a 4.50X16" slick, or a 5.00X16" slick that'd go under my skinnky bike HD's fender.
ReplyDeleteAll that trouble to make one in 19 inches? Sorry: That's just dumb.
I am still searching for the 18 x 4.5 for my project. If they pop up send me 3.
