We kept the center-mount gas cap because some of this is driven by the WWVDD Factor, as in "What Would Von Dutch Do?" Whatever tank was handy would have gone on the bike, side-mount or center-mount cap, and if he found out we cut up a perfectly good gas tank just to move the filler, he'd probably shoulder one of his custom rifles and take aim...

Best, DavidDavidhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14390743845086206429noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2202817742529020927.post-4774785597436681442010-04-29T10:52:34.144-07:002010-04-29T10:52:34.144-07:00spriger jeff does have a valid point though.

I would say that the newly painted sheet metal is not supposed to fool anyone into thinking those pieces are original to the Dutch build, and the project as a whole is actually a combination of early and late versions of the bike. This version would be at least the third. In other words there is no absolutely correct design to build it to. The peanut in question has the large cap and matches the the oil tank better. I like it for that. I nit picked the Mega Cycle restoration done by Fritz a little while back. While really nice work, it did fall a little short of a correct restoration and I called it. That bike could be brought back to 100% of what it was when originally loaded on the Cycle Hauler. The LVD isn't so clear cut and I think the way David is doing it is right on. But what i dont understand is that with all the close attention to detail going on, why would you use the wrong gas tank. The original tank was a made in england wassel side cap tank. The new tank looks to be the later made copy of the wassel with the large center cap and petcock bungs in the rear. Maybe its just me being a parts nerd but that isnt the tank i would have usedJeffhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12033280090347227716noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2202817742529020927.post-85534720899787155202010-04-26T11:16:39.958-07:002010-04-26T11:16:39.958-07:00Beautiful work man, inspirational stuff, hats off ...Beautiful work man, inspirational stuff, hats off to ya.Quaffmeisterhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10617388117258128336noreply@blogger.com
